(jiří macek) Marcel Wanders, the vizier of mannerism and decoration, has created a very decorative Sparkling chair from recycled PET bottles for the Italian brand of Magis. Even though he skillfully plays with the traditional morphology of PET bottles conditioned by manufacturing technologies, it is great that he has nothing in common with the horrors frequently created under the banner of recycling.
The production of PET bottles has always been a miraculous alchemy for me. The small capsule that takes the desired shape under pressure is not unlimitedly controllable. To achieve asymmetry or decoration on its frieze, which for example Jan Čapek can, is a real artistry. Even though Marcel Wanders does not push the shape of individual chair elements forward, he gives new possibilities to the entire technology. Not only is the Sparkling chair a very interesting chair made from a new material, thanks to the skills of Magis, it is also another possibility that the application of plastic offers. It is also very compelling to compare this chair with the polyethylene Air stool designed by Héctor Serrano for the Spanish brand of Gandia Blasco. Polyethylene and PET may rank highly among environmentally complicated materials, but they can be fun to use in the future.
Magis products can be found in the Czech Republic in the catalogue of 3DH.
