(jiří macek) Founded only a few years ago, the British brand Established & Sons always surprises the contemporary furniture scene with every new collection of products. Just have a look how it carries out such a drab term as “the dresser.”
If you ask why we chose a dresser for the demonstration of how original this British brand is, there are three reasons. The first one is Shay Alkalay, who recently graduated from the Royal College of Art in London and established the progressive Raw Edges studio that has been praised to the skies. He has designed one piece for Established & Sons for which he will never be forgotten. The Stack is a dresser with free drawers. While other dressers look best with all drawers carefully shut, the Stack looks good in any style one might envision. Motion is a part of its aesthetics. Shay himself recommends leaving the drawers partly open. “They look much more interesting in that way,” he says. He is right. Why not try to optically skew it a bit to the left?
The second reason for which I love ES drawers is the WrongWoods dresser, designed by Sebastain Wrong and Richard Woods. Even though their dresser seems to be made from a surprising and colorfully stained wood, in reality, it is made from printed fibre glass. Richard Woods enjoys playing with illusions. He uses wooden drawings and illusions of masonry in his projects that verge on art, architecture, and design. Allegedly, he does so in order to create the feeling of credibility and usefulness.
The third reason is real wood – pine – in the form of a series of the Crate 1-4 storage boxes from the British design hitmaker Jasper Morrison. The master of simple lines and scanty means presents us with a big novel about real beauty. When you have finished reading it, you will want to start reading again and again. Such is the charm of Jasper Morrison.
Apart from dressers, Established & Sons produce tables, chairs, sofas, and lights… They definitely rank among the freshest brands on the furniture scene, along with the Dutch brand moooi. It is a very innovative brand and a very British one – no matter if it means the fight of tradition, luxury, revolt, or humor, plus anything we know from the songs by David Bowie.
Well, see for yourselves. Established & Sons will present their collection for the first time in the Czech Republic at this year’s Designblok. Their presentation will take place in Konsepti, whose portfolio of brands represents this British brand in the Czech Republic.
