Bořek Šípek: Sun, Rain, And Their Intersections

(jiří macek) The collaboration between Bořek Šípek and Driade is always a very fascinating story. The catalogue of the famous Italian brand features treasures that, independent of time, trends, or moods, set up completely different norms of perceiving reality that are worth discovering.

Even though the most famous pieces that resulted from this collaboration will probably always be the iconic potbellied Vendom bowl and Celine vase that combine glass and porcelain, Driade’s philosophy and Šípek’s imagination still have a lot in common after all those years. Thus, the brand’s catalogue contains two new glass chandeliers and an amazing bowl that are based on the glass feast from the last year, which he presented at Ingo Maurer’s in Milan. The Apollonio chandelier is a crystal rain; the Norma substitutes sun in the interior thanks to its golden color. When one intersects the slightly baroque fruit arrangement of Orfeo bowl with real fruit, one will see hummingbirds - Mount Olympus will be very near. However, Apollonio does not refer the son of Zeus and Leto, but to the ancient mathematiciann from the Greek town of Perga, who in his work solved the intersections of objects and their impact on the behavior of solids. The basic shape was the circle from which Šípek’s chandelier is derived. Orfeo, no doubt, refers to the singing god Orpheus, who soothed pain and spread peace with his voice, as does the homonymous bowl.
