(jiří macek) The Doshi Levien studio has designed one of the most beautiful furniture pieces this year. It is a sofa called My Beautiful Backside that he designed for the Italian brand Moroso. The very same words could be used to describe their Princess sofa as well.
The London-based studio of Doshi Levien was founded by Jonathan Levien and Nipa Doshi in 2000. Their implementations include furniture, kitchenware, cutlery, men’s shoes, and even umbrellas. All these items feature an exotic touch that is not difficult to trace back to Nipa Doshi. In a very beautiful way, she blends her Indian roots and experience from local manufactories with the technologies and needs of the Western world. One can certainly see the connection of both European and Indian seating cultures in the furniture designed for Moroso.
My Beautiful Backside has succeeded in bringing cushions that are omnipresent in India to the solid state of European sofas. The resulting cushion structure represents an interior pleasure that an Indian maharaja, James Bond, or an old lady from Pelhřimov would definitely enjoy.
Princess, the other sofa designed for Moroso by Doshi Levien, is a collection of thin mats covered by various fabrics with a graphic style that harkens back to the world of One Thousand and One Nights. Actually, it is an interconnection of two distinct fairy-tale worlds. It appears that Hans Christian Andersen lent a helping hand to the beautiful Scheherazade (a.k.a. Nipa Doshi). Thanks to the use of Velcro, the mats can either be placed next to or put onto one another. Thus, a bed for Andersen’s princess with a very light sleep can be made. Try to place a green pea under them in the end.
Doshi Levien continues their cooperation with Moroso with these two projects. Last year, this collaboration launched the Charpoi day beds with the similarly distinctive, trans-oriental graphic design of covering fabrics.
Ask about them in Konsepti, the company that represents Moroso in the Czech Republic. When browsing www.doshilevien.com, have a look at the limited edition section. In addition, a gorgeous selection of men and women’s shoes can be found in the Apprentice section.
